Retail Licenses and Permits 101?

FAQ Scout

In Retail, getting the required permits and licensing your business can be a complex and time-consuming process. It is highly important that the details of the applications are correct, as mistakes could lead to further complications and at worst could result in the closure of your business.

So it is of utmost importance that proper licensing is obtained from the very beginning, a failure to do so could result in fines or even a criminal offense based on your location.

The most common types of licenses and permits we offer to ensure your business is running legally are :

Federal Tax ID:

Firstly your business would need an employment identification number (EIN). This is sometimes referred to as the Federal Tax identification number. Applying for an EIN is free and requires you to simply register online before you start your business with the retailers.

Business License:

Business licenses vary based on your location. Some locations require you to obtain a local business license, the requirements are usually published on your state’s website. Any additional licenses and fees if applicable can be found at your county’s office or by contacting your city clerk.

Business Name Registration/ DBA certificate:

Business name registration or “ Doing Business as” (DBA) is needed when you run a retail business by any name other than your own. Some licenses roll in the name registration whereas others require a separate DBA certificate. The requirements and documentation needed varies as per your state regulations.

Resale Certificate :

A resale certificate allows you to purchase goods tax-free from the manufacturers. For your every sale with your customer, you would be collecting sales tax and then paying it over to the state. The requirements vary based on your state regulations. A retail certificate is expected when working with vendors.

Certificate of Occupancy:

A certificate of occupancy is required in some areas/places and can be obtained with a simple application. The property will then be inspected by local departments with Fire, Health, Building Inspectors, etc.

Professional licenses:

A professional license is required when your business follows certain industries. Some of the industries for which professional licenses are required include pharmacists, Autometricist, and Hair Salons. The requirements vary based on your state’s regulations and can be found from your state’s licensing department.
